When I look back on all these worries, I remember the story of the old man who said on his deathbed that he had had a lot of trouble in his life, most of which had never happened.’
(Winston Churchill)

According to a recently conducted global research, nearly 50% of people take time off work due to stress-related issues at some point in their lives.

These are rather alarming figures.

As we know stress can be caused by many different demands of today’s life.

Work, relationship and money problems are often at top of the list.

It can affect your thinking, feeling and behaviour, resulting in sleeping problems, loss of appetite and problems with concentration.

Contradictory as it may sound, certain levels of pressure must exist if you are to perform to your maximum abilities.

In other words:

If you want to manage your stress successfully you need to learn how to efficiently balance your stress and productivity levels.

By following these simple steps you will be able to make stress work in your favor.

And that means you will be capable of achieving what you want in your life.

1. Believe In Yourself

If you can accept the fact that no one is perfect, that everyone including you has their own weaknesses then you are already on the right track to dealing with your stress well.

Why not focus on things that you know well and can do well?

Don’t try to be like someone else.

Instead, concentrate on making the best of yourself, best of what you are capable of in order to become successful.

2. Plan and Manage Your Time Better

Set goals for every day. Set reasonable deadlines to accomplish each task.

If you want to lower your stress levels you need to be able to make the best of your time.

It is essential you identify the urgency and importance of your day-to-day tasks and prioritise your work in order of importance.

Make sure you complete one task before starting the next one. If you leave something unfinished make it a top priority for the next day.

'Concentrate on today, for yesterday is gone and cannot be changed, and tomorrow will be shaped by what you do today.'

3. Learn To Understand Others

Your approach to life is surely different from that of your friend or a colleague.

Try not to get too pressured by other people’s attitudes.

There is something good in every one of us.

We are all different, and sometimes being a little better listener can help understand the other person better.

4. Learn To Unwind

It is important you find time for yourself to relax, recharge, to feel your inner peace and happiness.

There are so many ways to do this. Discover what works best for you.

What is it you love doing that lets you regain your energy?

Do you enjoy listening to relaxing music? Love walking in the countryside? Gardening? Bird spotting?

Anything that will give you your own ‘breathing space’.

5. Eat Well To Feel Well

If you eat 5 smaller meals a day you will feel better and stronger than consuming large meals less frequently.

Drink plenty of water. Eat vegetables, fresh fruit, whole grain foods, white meat.

Avoid sugar, salt, fats, junk food, red meat.

6. Enjoy Some Exercise

Regular exercise is important in maintaining your health and general wellbeing.

It is beneficial to your heart and reduces blood pressure and cholesterol levels.

Why not try a brisk walk, dancing, swimming, or Yoga.

7. Sleep Better To Live Better

In order to be productive and emotionally balanced you need to enjoy a quality sleep.

It makes a good practice to set a regular bedtime and wake up at the same time every day.

Avoid drinking coffee and tea and watching TV before bedtime.

It’s no use thinking of pending problems and issues.

Leave it for the next day to sort out.

Learn some good breathing techniques to help you relax and fall asleep faster.

Ditto...I like this Katrine. I try to do some of these things. Lately, I've noticed that when I eat more I feel better. Not eating well can sometimes contribute to depression...

Well put together - voted up

This is a great list of suggestions to alleviate stress. I have found that understanding others has helped me tremendously. I know that I can't ever be sure of what might be going on in a person's life. They may be irritable because they are facing a crisis of some sort. When I remember this, I am able to treat everyone with compassion and respect. And that, in turn, keeps my stress to a minimum. I'm not perfect at this but I'm getting better. Practice, practice, practice. Thanks so much for writing a great article.

Thanks all for your comments. Myself, I'm trying to follow all of these steps. I have found that mainly when I don't sleep well I don't feel well with myself and that reduces my energy to perform well in my daily tasks. And to sleep well your mind needs to be happy, in addition to other factors such as no drinking coffee too late and so. Then I analyze why my mind can't rest and I touch base on other points in the article. So, it all comes together, you need to be able to try to balance all in your life as well as possible in order to reduce stress, pressure, and feel and live better. And a positive outlook on life, and humour can help greatly!! :-)
