The habit of replacing high-priority tasks with those of lower priority, thus putting off important tasks to a later time is known as procrastination.

Many people tend to postpone the work that needs to be done to the eleventh hour.

This delays their ability to get closer to their desired goals.

As a result, they often feel guilty, overwhelmed, resentful, stressful, and they miss opportunities.

Different people tend to procrastinate for different reasons; hence there are various factors behind this problem.

First you need to find out what it is that is stopping you from moving forward and realizing your true potential.

Take a look at these common causes and learn how to overcome procrastination.

1. Relieving Stress

Anxiety, stress or worries can make it difficult for an individual to work effectively and efficiently.

Therefore people tend to make the wrong choice of trying to reduce their stress by procrastinating.

Although it may indeed work, it will only end up having an impact on other aspects of your life.

Instead, find a way to balance those important tasks in your life along with getting involved in activities that will help you relieve your stress.

Always try to find some time for yourself, learn to relax, do something you really enjoy.

2. Getting Overwhelmed

You may have quite a lot of responsibilities on your shoulders, even more than you can handle and manage.

In the corner of your mind you are aware that you will not be able to complete the tasks at hand.

As a result of this you are likely to feel very overwhelmed and this again causes you to procrastinate.

Take a break from it all and take up only as many responsibilities as you will be able to easily handle.

3. Laziness

You may resent the task in front of you. You may think to yourself:

‘I don’t have to do it right now. It can wait.’

Especially if the work you need to complete is too hectic and time consuming, procrastinating might seem like a way to avoid the effort that is involved.

Giving up and getting it done will only result in further procrastinating.

Try to think of a way to reward yourself when you manage to accomplish it.

Also it is a good idea to remind yourself of consequences if you don’t complete the task.

4. Lack of Motivation

While being a bit lazy from time to time is quite natural among people, getting things done seems impossible if you lack the motivation.

Look for some inspiration that will motivate you.

If you know that something needs doing but it’s not emotionally important to you, find a way to make it important.

What are you going to get by doing this that’s important enough to motivate you to do it now?

5. Lack of Focus

Distractions are everywhere around us.

But you will have to learn to minimize and ignore them in order to continue with your tasks.

Disconnect the Internet, turn off your phone if you have to, check your e-mails and voicemail at set intervals.

Find yourself a quiet place where you can concentrate.

Take short breaks as a reward for accomplishing smaller sub-tasks.

Make sure you get enough sleep, eat well and exercise to increase your energy and concentration.

6. Fear of the Outcome

You may be afraid that you will fail or, on the other hand, how you would deal with a change if you were to succeed.

Or perhaps you fear being rejected or looking like a fool if the results are not as you picture.

Try to connect with your fear, realize it and steadily address it.

Understand that meeting with problems and making mistakes is a natural part of your growth and something you will be able to learn from.

7. Not Knowing Where or How to Get Started

You know you want to accomplish something but just don’t know where or how to get started.

And because you can’t figure it out, you set the task aside.

Try to set goals. Write down a detailed plan what you need to do in order to get going. Set reasonable deadlines.

Making a commitment on paper, setting your goals consisting of sub-tasks makes it easier to follow and transforms it all into something more tangible.

8. Being a Perfectionist

You may be putting off implementing your ideas by using the excuse that you are not yet ready because you feel you would deliver it poorly at your current level of skill.

But, in order to develop and perfect your skills you need to practice, and unless you practice you cannot implement.

Therefore it makes sense to start your task with your current skill, learn from the mistakes you might make, perfect it as you go along, rather than not implementing your idea at all.

Since procrastination hinders people from finishing essential tasks, hence remaining motivated and finding a way to enjoy whatever you are doing will allow you to keep on the right track and towards achieving your goals faster.

Once you find that you are comfortable in doing the work you will not feel any of the factors that lead to procrastination.

Keep all of this in mind and avoid giving in to the feeling of postponing tasks for later.

Very guilty of committing number 6. I always have this "Fear of Failure" mentality that halts me from trying something outside my comfort zone. But like you say, you can't grow into a better person without making mistakes. You have great, no nonsense writing here. Very enjoyable!
